A mature maple tree first greeted us before moving into our new home. This move symbolized a fresh start for me, my daughter, and our dog. A way to rebuild a home in a unit part of a 4-plex that was home to many before us. The place we moved into needed work and updating. I saw the work as a therapy, working past obstacles while working through ailments afflicting me at the time.
The home is now very much ours, but it took some time to make it this way. Before, the rooms were vacant and showed signs of those who lived before us. During this time, other neighbours would move out, and I took this as an opportunity to photograph the empty rooms. Only to find that they seem filled with thought even in the emptiness of it all. The open spaces are like a mausoleum, inviting meditation.
The tree that once greeted me was torn down a year later. It wasn't easy to see it go. But in its absence is now light.
