The Metropolitan Expressway Route 3 Shibuya Line is one of the oldest urban expressways in Tokyo, having opened 58 years ago as a main artery that crosses the Tokyo metropolitan area. Near where I live, the Route 3 crosses the center of Shibuya. There, Shibuya is about to be reborn as a futuristic metropolis with a series of modern skyscrapers through a large-scale redevelopment that is said to occur once every 100 years.
What kind of light and shadow do Tokyo's old highways and most modern skyscrapers interweave? The sight of changing city arouses my interest and dispels the feeling of being fed up with the spread of COVID-19 and the conflicts in the world.
The city will change towards the hopes of the future, and so will I. With that thought in mind, I shoot the present of Shibuya, which is evolving by merging with the Tokyo legacy.
