These portraits depict Dutch heavy metal fans in the style of Dutch Golden Age paintings. Like guild members of old, these metallers wear a distinctive uniform. Their beer-stained patch-covered denim jackets bear testimony to years of headbanging. The greater the number of patches, the higher the status within the guild. And while many generations have passed since their merchant forebears once commissioned portraits to show off their status, their characteristic Dutch faces - many from the provinces where immigration is low - would not look out of place on the walls of the Rijksmuseum.
