Flowers 2.0 (Feeding the worms) is a continuation of a series I made 2011 which had as its starting point shadows of flowers around my late grandmothers house. In the 2021 version the shadows belong to flowers planted by me during the pandemic at the exact same place and the photos were taken at night. The awareness of death might have created a need to revisit the flower as symbol of bigger cycles and pure life force. Life and death as two sides of the same coin - the cruelty and beauty as inseparable.
The series is influenced both by the pandemic, menopause and depression (and when editing – war). I want to celebrate the ecstasy of life. Flowers are a display of life, death and new life in miniature form used in rituals of transition all over the world. And what beautiful forms it is – even when closer to decay than life. Important here is the relationship with the earth - that which is taken for granted, seen as decayed rubbish or bad memories as the starting point for something new to unfold. The photos was taken in the autumn – when the flowers are reproducing their own pattern in the seeds. By focusing on the shadows they are reduced to silhouettes/symbols. Seeds as memory or memory as seeds? Decay and death as a condition for new life.
The photos taken when the flowers were still rooted are subtitled: “Feeding the worms”. The remixes are subtitled "This is not my real name" and the flower drawings on old photos: "Wormfiddling".
