Domestication of objects refers to the fundamental human desire of taking elements from outside our environment and making them our own. We like taking objects that once belonged a specific time and place and domesticating them to fit our own selfish needs. We do this by attaching our own meaning to them. We can observe this when we see children playing with frying pans that quickly transform into space ship or how an antique hand mixer becomes an aesthetic object of nostalgia that’s displayed on the living room mantle. We are all masters of curating our own personal space by domesticating objects that are meaningful to us.
As human beings we understand the ephemeral nature of our existence and we seek to create lasting and meaningful memories through the objects that we collect and the spaces that they inhabit. Domestication of objects is an exploration into our intrinsic nature as meaning makers and how that influences our own unique self expression as individuals.
