The previous owners had a four and a half, foot green iguana. When I bought this, it was a total mess. The thing was pissing all over the place and there were piles of crap everywhere.

I’ve always wanted to do this. I was a truck driver for about 5 years, but it’s not quite the same. That’s not traveling. This is traveling. If I could go anywhere and stay a few months, I’d go to paradise. I just don’t know where that’s at yet. I haven’t found it.

For most of my life money meant a lot. Finally, I decided that happiness was the best way to live my life rather than trying to buy happiness through work. Happiness is not money or a house. It comes from inside. You just have to match up what feels good in here to what feels good out there and you’ll be all right.

For my most important work and the best times of my life, I take the VW bus. The journey is not just about getting there. The trip starts now. Slow down and enjoy what’s going on immediately around you.

We’re from Carson City. We travel in a converted van for camping. The sofa makes into a bed, but that’s the only convenience that’s in there. It’s fine for the two of us for a day or two. Now a days, we can’t pay for a lot of gas so we can’t get a big one. The economy the way it is, this works for us just fine. We’re both retired, but I’m just tired (laughing).

I’ve been out of work as a union laborer for 7 months. I’ve lived in this van for about 1 year and 2 months and I like it. Actually, I love living in my van. My biggest problem is not being able to spend time with my kids. That’s my biggest thing. If I didn’t have four kids and didn’t have that worry, psh I’d live in my van forever.

I’ve stayed in campgrounds and I never want to do that again. Too noisy, too many people. I strive to get away from everybody. If I see another person camping, it’s too close.

I first came here 5 years ago because I’d heard about it from a friend. I stopped here on my way down to Baja and then stopped again on my way back up. I decided to come back the following year and stay for the winter. Now this is my fifth winter. I don’t have the intention to come here every winter, but it just fits in with my plans.

I’m convinced that we right here have the answer to the earth. Living simply and frugally - can you just imagine what that would do? My notion is that the difference between one person and the other is the complexity of his or her character. The way you get complex is by engaging with people. I'm out here doing this, in love with life, and trying to make it count.

We’ve had this motorhome for about 20 years. We live over here on the mountain, but we’ve travelled all over the place. We stay close now because my husband is over at the house and is on oxygen and has diabetes. We stay close here so I can run home and check on him. We’ve been here for a week and we’ll be here for the whole month of July.

When someone close to you dies, especially in such a tragic manner, it makes you question a lot. For instance, why are we pouring money into a house and accumulating all these possessions that we don’t need. Life if more important than that. Living is more important than that.

I was a computer systems administrator until a few years ago when I was laid off. By the time I was ready to go back to work, the economy had tanked. The experience I had was just specialized enough that it was very difficult for me to find work. Selling my house was a difficult, but freeing process. It would have cost me more to keep my collections than to just give them away.
