Artist Julius Rooymans is a storyteller with a fascination for history and large-scale works. In 2019 he realized the project Nachtwacht360 - The Other Side of Art, a photographic reconstruction with lookalikes and a fictional background of Rembrandt's iconic painting.
Julius Rooymans grew up in a family of artists and studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. He has been shooting for nearly 25 years and has made covers for Newsweek and The New York Times. The autonomous work of the visual artist has been presented at art fairs such as Art Miami, KunstRAI, Art Wynwood and is included in the collections of private collectors and companies. Rooymans lives and works in Amsterdam.
In the new art project The Shadow of the Master, the works of world-famous Dutch master painters come together and the dark sides of artistry are highlighted, such as love, self-mockery, poverty, sadness and adversity. As with the Nachtwacht360, 180 lookalikes have been sought for this project that resemble their predecessors, which are 350 years older.
Thanks to the collaboration of renowned institutions such as the Allard Pierson, Museum Het Rembrandthuis, Museum Vrolik and well-known collectors and antique dealers, the photographic works feature numerous original objects, services, weapons and decors. With the expertise and unbridled dedication of professionals, the costumes, jewelry and hairpieces have been made historically correct down to the smallest details.
