Vision of a Queer West

Our project “Vision of a Queer West” is an ongoing visual documentation and celebration of the LGBTQ+ community's vital presence in the American West, both historically and in the present day. By challenging the erasure of queer and trans individuals from the traditional narrative of the American West, this project aims to showcase our diverse contributions to the region's culture and heritage, ultimately redefining and broadening our understanding of the Western experience. This project is a collection of individual stories of real queer people who embody the spirit of the American West in a myriad of ways, and the places they inhabit. The subjects range from ranchers, wranglers, rodeo athletes, Western artists and more. Their stories convey resilience and a sense of belonging within a culture that has not always welcomed or recognized them. By emphasizing the rich and varied experiences of our subjects, our project aims to challenge assumptions about the West and inspire a more inclusive understanding of its history and culture. Through this visual exploration, we hope to create a lasting impact on how the American West is perceived and appreciated, ultimately fostering greater empathy and connection among the wider public. This project not only pays tribute to the courageous individuals who have forged their paths in the face of adversity but also serves as an enduring testament to the power of representation in shaping our collective narrative.
