Even though I’m not religious, the Christian cross as a symbol of community surfaced throughout my personal work on a regular basis. Last fall I felt it is time to give the cross, the church, the religion an exclusive project to figure out, what this years-long fascination is based on.
Having been working on 3D for years, I knew that this would be a 3D project. So I thought:
Reduce the the picture to black and white. Colors all always a mess without 3D-glasses. Red and cyan in the picture will become graphical elements if possible, so the pictures will work without 3d-glasses too. The main object should be the focus of the picture, meaning: having the least or no amount of cyan and red.
Both colors would serve another purpose too. Red and blue (here cyan) are very important colors in Christianity. Red is associated with the blood of Christ, the sacrifice of martyrs, and the Holy Spirit. Blue, on the other hand represents the Virgin's purity, symbolizes the sky, and is labeled as color of the empress.
But there was still another idea. I wondered: What if I take a vertical and a horizontal picture for the 3D composition? - It makes a cross and is perfect for the project!
But it's interesting in a different way too. You get the center of the picture in 3D and colored, whereas the fringes remain two-dimensional and b/w. Thus the pictures are not only reflecting on religion and its views, but on society in general.
