When You See Them

The “When You See Them” photography project started in 2021. It explores the theme of giving GenX African-American men their flowers while they can still smell them. I celebrated my 50th birthday in 2021. The world was grappling with the undeniable fact that systemic racism was still thriving. I’d lived through several similar flashpoints in my life and felt my platform as an artist could be used to highlight men like me, help them feel seen and loved at a time when we felt our struggles were for naught. Part of the first post-segregation generation of African-Americans, we have been uniquely impacted by the more subtle tools of systemic racism. Seeing history repeat itself is exhausting and can make one give up on fighting for change. We’re tired, yet we persevere sharing joy, love, and hope amongst ourselves and in our myriad communities. I couldn't think of a group more deserving of their flowers. In 2021, I collaborated with Full Bloom by Lauren in Atlanta, GA for a series of portrait sessions featuring me and 3 close friends. She designed and executed a floral installation in my studio for each session and the results exceeded our expectations. The project is ongoing with 3 more subjects in 2023 and addition of film formats.
