La Semana Santa (Holy Week) is the annual Catholic commemoration of the Passion of Christ. In Antigua, Guatemala, a beautiful old town, the entire city participates in the celebration. Daily processions where worshippers (men, women, or children) in purple, white, or black robes carry enormous floats covered with life-size statues take place. The air is thick with incense as devotees purify the path, constantly replenishing their incense burners. Beautiful carpets of flowers are built on the streets as a short-lived offering to God, trampled by the heavy floats and the marchers.
