These images form part of a series of night time street shots taken in Tokyo earlier this year. I was drawn to more quiet, intimate, reflective and personal moments in what is often perceived to be a non-stop, loud and bustling city, confusing and impenetrable to outsiders.
The choice of Cinestill 800T film stock supports this feeling of intimacy with the subjects, whilst retaining a cinematic feel. It deliberately avoids the clichéd, hyper-stylised cyberpunk-esque photography of Tokyo at night featuring heavily saturated cyan and magenta which is so prevalent now.
As a solo traveller these moments and the feeling of contemplation resonates with me, rather than trying to present Tokyo as some kind of stereotypical other-worldly, fantastical futuristic place. The cinematography of Christopher Doyle in the films of Wong Kar Wai is a strong influence.
