Material Worlds is an ongoing project that uses photography as a tool to critically reflect on the anthropocentric environments we produce and live in.
Instead of presenting a clear message or trying to advocate for a certain cause, this body of work invites the viewer to observe the world through the lenses of complexity and ambiguity. Beyond the first layer of appearance, one can find a diverse assemblage that is a result of social realities, cultural norms, shared intelligence, chemical components, political decisions, etc.
While the project as a whole takes on a global perspective the five images selected here were all taken in Cabo Verde, a small island state off the African West Coast. Although the country is developing rapidly it still grapples with the impacts of colonisation and the people suffering during the Atlantic slave trade.
