Women@Work is a documentary photography project about women who do what many in Western society still consider to be “men’s work”. It is still noted with mild bewilderment whenever one finds a woman driving a bus, working at a construction site, in a research laboratory, or fixing one's car. This comes as no surprise as women generally make up less than 25% of the workforce in these fields that are considered male-dominated occupations.
One of the key factors perpetuating gender gaps in male-dominated fields is the lack of role models to inspire young people, irrelevant of their gender, to pursue careers in these areas. It is a challenge to address the many lingering misconceptions that persist. Perhaps by exploring the stories of women in these fields may encourage others to follow them into the world of the arts, business, or science.
