I am currently working on documenting my own experience as a mother as well as documenting motherhood with subjects of interest within a South African context.
In photographing children I am drawn to their dreamlike sense of wonder and curiosity that is often lost as we grow older. Childhood is a fleeting time, marked by a sense of joy but also mourning as mothers stand by witnessing their children grow. I am exploring an alternative to the normalised societal imagery depicting motherhood and family life. My work seeks to evoke a feeling of nostalgia for this time and explore the complexities of the postpartum experience, exposing the hidden and often censored realities of everyday life seen through the mothers gaze.
