Glamoor! follows the High Priestess of Edinburgh, Mystika Glamoor, and her shows around the capital city.
Lou McCurdy has worked with Mystika for five years, documenting her shows and the acts that perform there. With the boom of drag in pop culture over the last decade McCurdy wants to ensure that the local queer scenes and what they provide does not get lost. The rising hostility to the LGBT+ community, specifically the trans community and drag performers, has painted this space of joy and healing with falsehoods. Drag queens and drag kings are pillars in our society, performing preparation rituals and getting dressed in ostentatious garb to perform for a crowd gathered to witness their ceremony. They create and hold worlds to allow us a break from whatever lies beyond the club doors.
This is a five image selection of an on going body of work, a mix of black and white and colour with the final output set to be a photo book. These images were taken at the start of the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival 2023, the night of Mystika’s Birthday Bonanza, celebrating the sixth year anniversary of her first performance.
