I choose to describe myself as a picture maker – photographer. I use a Nikon camera with an autofocus lens to capture an image. The shooting of the image is often done in the zone of the unconscious, always with a feeling. “A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art.” Paul Cézanne
The photo image may be complete, with the vital components of framing and white space collaborating in the final work, or the first photo image may be the beginning for a scroll, shadow box, or larger composite. I never know where I am going with the first click of the shutter.
My goal as a picture maker is to move beyond the conscious moment, creating images that are timeless, suspenseful, with the mystery that comes from the unconscious. It is not about me or We figuring it, the image, out, objectifying it via thoughts or words.
