In a small room on the outskirts of Nairobi I set up my makeshift studio. My subjects all lived in and around Kibera, the largest urban slum in Africa, but they had all come from somewhere else. They had come from some of the most unstable countries in the world; places like South Sudan, Congo and Rwanda and had moved to Kibera in search of a better life. Their reasons for leaving were all different but commonly involved war, death and persecution. They all wanted to tell their stories, just to have a chance to be heard (although some wanted to keep their identity secret for fear of what might happen to them or their families because of what they wanted to say).
