“Autopsia Autopista” is an ongoing project that explores the scope of the term “American” and considers my relationship to Latin America as a foreigner who grew up in Ecuador. The provided images were made along the Pan-American highway (an 18,000 mile stretch of road that at one point represented an idea of interconnectedness between the northern and southern continents) and were made over the last year as I drove from Colombia to Argentina, photographing and developing large format film in my truck. In the next stage of this project, I will continue along the northern hemisphere’s portion of the Pan-American highway where I’ll create images that communicate with the existing work to explore concepts of identity within and across cultures and borders. I also aim to collaborate with 5 writers and/or poets from different points within the Americas to create short writings to accompany my images, incorporating different perspectives diversifying the conversation of the artworks and challenging the limit of the term “American”.
