In France, we say that you can see someone coming with his big hooves when he does things without any finesse. In a frank, brusque, coarse, almost bestial way. A good big hoof.
That's how I think of photography. Seeing the moment coming and marking it with a stroke of the hoof, like a stamp. As if I'd disturbed a mare at night and she'd hit me with a stampede. The force of nature in my face.
The hoof is this photographic strike, this seeing it coming, this apprehension. My project is all about seeing the nightmare coming. We all see it. The nightmare of an overpowering nature and fate that engulfs and crushes.
This series marks the end of an age, the end of a road, breathlessness, the last traces of hooves, to ask a single question:
What comes next?
