'ORCA' - Worlds Apart

'ORCA' forms part of a larger photographic project - 'Worlds Apart' that delves into innovative ways of perceiving and comprehending our world through a unique lens. This image encapsulates the essence of John Berger's profound insight, echoing his words that 'it is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world.' Early morning photography offers the advantages of soft, gentle light and colour contrast, which enhance subtle details in texture and form. In the case of 'ORCA,' achieving the desired B & W effect was a simple process involving basic conversion through the B & W filter within the MS Photos app. Shortly after the moment captured in this photograph, the Orca drilling rig underwent a profound transformation. It was towed to Alang, India, and repurposed as scrap metal. The rig, a once-prominent symbol of industrial innovation and energy production, bears a faint reminder of its past glory. With this photograph, I seek to raise awareness of the unexplored narratives hidden within the mundane, demonstrating that even the most commonplace subjects can be vessels for better understanding.
