Since 2010, when I retired from the practice of architecture, I have been working on photographic studies of buildings and other forms of material culture. In 2021, I read Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Klara and the Sun” novel and realized that the kind of image I was most interested in finding and developing to study would be – like many of the things Klara finds herself looking at and trying to put together and understand in her mind – images of things only partially seen and partially understood, something to puzzle over and become newly aware of, or conscious of, through study.
