Spires is a photo series documenting the towering sea stacks that cover the California coast. Part of the Franciscan Complex, the rock formations were created over time with the erosion of softer rock leaving behind harder rocks that can be seen dotting the coastline. Around 20,000 types of outcroppings are a part of the California Coastal National Monument and are a part of the marine ecosystem.
Shot on medium format, large prints highlight the monolithic nature of the sea stacks, the erosion in the rocks and parts of the marine life that depend on it like beds of mussels covering the bases and seabirds resting on the tops.
Actual print size I envision 40+ inches to really allow the viewer to see the details, like in Spire 8 where the rock is dotted with a massive flock of seabirds and Spire 4 with the entire base being covered in mussels.
