I investigate the Mexican community in New York, and traditions at their origin in Mexico. As daylight moves into darkness, my images become soft. This muteness expresses a traveling space between New York City and towns in Mexico. I have followed the dance presentations and festivals organized by the Tepeyac Association, founded by the Archdiocese of New York, and a Jesuit priest from Mexico, to address the unique needs of Mexican immigrants in New York City. I also documented families and how they follow traditions around food, holidays, as well as dance performances, protests and daily life in both countries.
My work combines a lush, visual style with a deep interest in the customs of Mexican communities. I explores themes including love, overcoming adversity, migration and adaptation My photographs are in the documentary mode combined with a sense of personal vision social commitment and emotional intensity.
