The person I have experienced most in my life is Emma, my grandmother.
Emma spends most of her time at the window, watching the world goes on like a spectator at the cinema.
Throughout her daily rituals she continues to make herself known to me.
These photos are meant to be an exchange between her and me.
Emma is glorious. When she knows she is being photographed, I see in her an intensity and a fierceness that strikes me. I feel the need to let her know that she is important to me, and I want to make her a part of what I do, to give her attention, so that our moments will stick in time..
Photographing my grandmother also means bringing attention to what it means old age and being no longer self-sufficient. The elderly people are a treasure chest of wealth, experience and unique emotions, and not individuals to be sidelined or excluded from the rest of society.
The loneliness of our grandparents is a timely and urgent issue, which often has dramatic outcomes on their health as well. We are social beings even at ninety years old.
These pictures hold all of that.
Here is my heart.
