OUTRENOIR (Beyond Black): when black becomes more, emits brightness, and a secret light.
Pierre Soulages is the painter who inspires me the most. He said “Black, to me, has pictorial qualities, it’s a strong, violent colour. If you put black over a dark colour, that colour, suddenly, lights up”.
I systematically see light within black and black within light. Soulages’s work always resonated with me.
That is why working in black and white was always self-evident to me, and perfectly suits me, through its constant struggle between light and shadow, each trying to have the upper hand. And as a Manichean way of feeling.
Swaying between darkness and light. It’s this complementary duality that I’m trying to show. These photos reflect our share of darkness, and the light that can emerge from it. Or the opposite.
I started this series several years ago. Without knowing it, it became a personal quest, in search of light.
