Perhaps the same is true of fences, or boundaries in general - reflecting some prior interpretation of how to divide and to structure our reality. If these fences mark a line that we can all agree on, then there is no problem. But when a fence is used to force the will of some against the will of others - well, we see the consequences in our history books.
Walking in the beautiful Japanese mountains of Yatsugatake allows me to ponder what it means to belong, to pursue my goals, to find my own way even if there are obstacles.
