The abandoned mining town of Pyramiden at the northern "end of the world" is a visible example of what the Soviet Union wanted to give to the Arctic if communism existed. Fortunately, this did not happen.
Pyramiden is a Soviet "ghost" town on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, which was once inhabited by Russian and Ukrainian miners and their families. Coal mining gave the Soviet Union a foothold in Svalbard. Pyramiden became the living room of communism in the West. Pyramiden made Moscow's Arctic dreams come true. The foothold in Svalbard is also important for Moscow in its broader Arctic strategy.
