In 2016, the seismic impact of the British referendum set off a transformative process culminating in the country's exit from the European Community in February 2020. Beyond political implications, Brexit sparked debates on national identity, economic prospects, and the viability of the European Union.
Brexit exposed deep divisions in the establishment, revealing a crisis of representation in the party system and eroding authority for national and international elites. The breakdown in national-popular hegemony highlighted the loss of central government control over the British people.
My project, titled "Shine On," initiated in 2019 and ongoing, explores British national identity across the Isles. It observes a dynamic transformation responding to the global landscape, especially in marginalized sectors, portraying paradoxical effects.
"Shine On" delves into the multifaceted appearance of modern-day Britain, capturing its perpetual flux and contradictions as it shapes a fresh identity in a changing world. Traversing familiar landscapes, my documentation aims to capture a societal metamorphosis, revisiting distorted memories against a backdrop reflecting profound community changes
