This image is a part of my series Skin of the Earth. When we spend time in nature we rid all noises and distractions from our mind, and instead begin to hear our own voice more clearly. Nature allows us to confront our own thoughts. I think people find this connection with the natural world a comforting yet deeply vulnerable experience. In a world that has come to see nature as a commodity for exploitation and extraction, being met by nature makes us feel small and insignificant; but at the same time, it is reassuring, as it seeks to root us back on the ground and remind us of what is truly important. Nature gives voice to a world that our busy lives so often neglect. It encourages us to take a step back, listen to the rustling of the leaves, notice the ripples in the water, and simply breath. Nature fosters an appreciation for the beautiful intricacies that surround us and exist within ourselves. The touch shared between our own skin and the skin of the earth reminds us of the powers of the natural world. This space needs to be protected now more than ever; we must cultivate space for nature, in the same way that nature cultivates space for us.
