In this project I am creating mashups where I modify existing paintings, which are in the public domain, to create alternate realities. Visual art mashups often aim to challenge conventions, explore new possibilities, and provide viewers with a fresh perspective. They can be playful and humorous, provide a cultural commentary, be political or be a means of creative expression. The process of mashup creation allows artists to engage with a wide range of influences and experiment with the boundaries of traditional artistic forms.
My images can be organized into a variety of intents. Many fall into the political commentary as evidenced by a luncheon on the grass, the intrusion of a tanker and oil barrels into idyllic scenes and the two photos of war themes.
Some fall into the humorous / cultural category, where additions of contemporary devices or activities are contrasted with life as documented in paintings a 100 years ago. For example a modern traveler with a motor home stopping at an inn from the 1600’s.
A major goal with my mash-ups is to make the added visual material be as subtle as possible. I want them to match the color, texture and composition of the original painting.
