The longing for consolation in this challenging times created a need in me for a re-perspectivation of my „Heimat“ – the Rhineland – that shows beauty and abyss at the same time.
I want to portrait an old cultivated landscape that oscillates between an Arcadian romantic landscape and the abysmal gaze of David Lynch; with a beautiful creepiness that can happen both in broad daylight or near dark. I want to show the imminent broody-ness of the Rhineland which is fueled by the warmth and humidity of the Rhine climate. Whenever man looks away, nature takes back and expresses itself in an abundance.
A nature that creates places loaded with personality, character and traces of history – that let you ask: what has happened here; why is that so and – since ages – led to the many ingrained myths and legends in the collective memory of the Rhineland.
A documentary faithfulness is only deceptive in my work; rather, it is about the atmospheric moments of the surreal expressed through shape, light and framing. They serve as a vehicle for my inner view, become autonomous and open up space for the imagination.
