In March 2022, Abdel(name changed) disappeared. He had previously indicated in a phone call that he might not come back. The last text message from Lukas read:
"Please don't disappear."
Abdel's reply: "I think thats exactly what i'm gonna do!"
He had played in my theater group for two years and spent six years trying to gain a foothold in Germany after being on the run for a long time. He no longer wanted to sit back and do nothing in the face of the systematic attempts to make people useless in the European and German asylum system and decided to leave the country of his own accord in 2022.
Ironically and unexpectedly, his path led him to Dublin. The place after which the key is named that regulates the responsibility of European states for asylum procedures.
I wanted to see with my own eyes and feel with my own heart what was happening in front of me, as a European citizen, all the time, without letting it get to me in my everyday life. Not as a doomed attempt to simulate a refugee experience for myself, but as a subjective witness in places whose perception is extremely shifted in relation to the privileges that someone has. I followed his track from Berlin to Dublin.
