St. Leonards is a playground of freedom and invention characterised by a group of year-round swimmers, the Bluetits, who meet daily in a maritime playground that evokes a sense of freedom and euphoria. The cool water against their skin is invigorating and refreshing, the vastness of the sea inspiring awe and connection to something greater than oneself. In this ongoing photo project beginning in June 2023, I've observed the Bluetits’ reactions that accompany the rush of adrenaline, the exhilaration as they swim against currents. These bathers create a distinctive sense of community and camaraderie; theirs is a supportive social environment for everyone taking part in the Channel plunges. I've observed they may experience vulnerability and respect for the elements, deeply intertwined with the oceanic world. There are parallels with Greek myths, humans pitted against the power of nature and drama depicted by Victorian salon painters. One can see connections to the plight of waterborne immigrants in the almost unhinged world of today. However, at the core, the Bluetits have established a unique, enriching form of recreation and personal fulfilment which I am intrigued to document.
