Allready in preparation of World War II Germany started to fortify its western border. Finally this activity ended up in a gigantic project, for some time consuming almost the total building resources of the whole country. Over hundreds of kilometers, from the Netherlands down to Switzerland, along the border tank trapps, bunkers and air bases where built. Since after the war it turned out, that removing these structures is almost impossible and at least totally uneconomic, lots of them are still present.
The current project aims at investigating how the remnants of the West Wall nowadays interact with the surrounding nature and landscape. All photographs were taken in the Eifel, a region southwest of Cologne. Here it it fascinating to see how in some case nature recaptured the concrete structures and in others the leftovers of war are simply integrated into agricultural areas.
In many cases very interesting constellations occur, with a unique aesthetic, which I try to visualize in my pictures.
