During a visit, my 80-year-old mum accidentally poured vinegar over her newly bought crate of violets while cleaning the tiles. The plants wilted instantly.
Household generic salt and vinegar have an all-destructive impact on the soil, where more than 60% of all organisms live. However, these substances are still promoted online as environmentally garden-friendly pesticides.
This series visualizes what is happening on a small scale in my garden. A similar process is happening at a macro level due to climate change and industrial agriculture.
Climate change causes salinization. Droughts bring old salt layers to the surface, and the rising seawater penetrates previously unaffected areas. The agricultural industry does its share by using fertilizer and by irrigating from salt-contaminated sources. These practices cause a reduced capacity of plants to take in water, a leading reason for causing new deserts.
1/5 of agricultural grounds are affected worldwide, according to estimates.
