In the realm of motherhood, an aura of romanticism often envelops the experience, obscuring the raw truth that lies beneath. “Virgins on the Cross," aims to document the ambivalence that is innate to motherhood challenging the idealised notions surrounding motherhood and shed light on its veracious nature. This visual narrative challenges the stereotypes and societal expectations placed on mothers. In this series prevails the moments of exhaustion, the struggle to maintain a sense of self, and the weight of societal judgement, with the purpose of serving as a poignant reminder of the relentless demands placed on mothers, while also dismantling the romanticised notions of motherhood in visual language. It recognizes the visceral mother-child bond, but also acknowledges the complexities, through explosion of vulnerabilities’ moments, that can often be overshadowed, providing a more realistic understanding of the journey, through a conversation that challenges the traditional narratives and invites consideration of other aspects and representations of motherhood. Through an exploration of sexuality after childbirth, the depths of visceral love, and the conflicts that can arise, I aim to present a more honest and truthful portrayal of motherhood.
