These are images I have made over the last few years of my mother and her sister, each of them living with her own form of Alzheimer's Disease.
Just before the start of the first Covid lockdown, my father died suddenly. The two sisters, each facing their own losses and illness, then lived together in my mother's house until my aunt's death in 2023.
These were difficult times, and I made an effort to photograph the good times along with the tough. As the years go on, we will be glad to remember the experience in the round, not just the sadness.
My mother remains in her home; good times are harder to come by these days. A photographer herself, she taught me to look out for window light on a face. She can no longer use a camera, and cannot always recognise her children, but she knows it's me by my camera, and we still make photos together in the window light.
