This project focuses on Asian drag artists and key moments in their journeys that have shaped who they are today.
I visited drag queen, Le Fil in their hometown of Brighouse, West Yorkshire, where I photographed them at various bus stops around town. They are seen wearing a dress they made, presenting the Yorkshire White Rose. When they were younger, they would spend much time at these stops/on the bus to Huddersfield. This was their way of searching for something more and where they eventually joined a local amateur dramatics company called the Lawrence Batley Theatre.
As a young adult, Le Fil started taking part in many shows at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield including ’The King and I’. ’The King and I’ was one of the first Western films they watched featuring key Asian representation. Le Fil pays homage to this core memory in their life by wearing an outfit at this theatre specially designed to emulate those seen in the movie. It was also the first time they ever went on a proper stage to perform and it really paved the way for who they are today.
