"In this photographic exploration, I delve into the life of Wei Yizhe, a 26-year-old artist with autism, whose world unfolds in colors and shapes devoid of facial contours—a testament to his unique perception. Diagnosed at the age of five, Wei expresses himself through vibrant paintings and music, crafting a reality where characters merge facelessly, mirroring his challenges with facial recognition.
My lens captures the quotidien — his home, his sanctuary of a studio, his interactions with objects that gain significance through his heightened senses. Wei finds solace in the soft textures of plush toys and often channels his anxiety into the fabric of his clothing, leaving behind threads of his inner turmoil.
Individuals with autism have their own unique worlds; we exist alongside them like parallel universes. With this photoshoot, I aim to draw closer to an individual, or rather, to a community. On a certain level, photographing Wei Yizhe's inner world is akin to capturing my own. Each of us is an island unto ourselves.
