Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.
Albert Einstein
Growing up in the Palouse region of northern Idaho in the 70’s I had the freedom to roam. The region’s rolling fields, open lakes, mountains, and valleys shaped me. I realized how deeply my soul connected with the road unfurling before me, rhythms of the oyster docks, when I started making photographs during the solitude of the pandemic. I find the sounds of silence and cool air on my face very calming and meditative.
I now live in a suburb of Seattle, when I travel – yes, jaunts back to the Palouse but elsewhere, too - the smell of dry grasses, the taste of summer air or the distance hum of a tractor, I associate with my childhood and conjure the feelings of home. Whether grieving a loved one or traipsing through the mountains, hills or floating on the water, I am fed by the intricacies of nature. The beauty I encounter intensifies my connection and expands my heart.
