One night, while driving around Bulgaria, documenting the rich heritage of masked traditions of my country I came across the remote village of Momina Tsarkva located at Strandzha mountains near the Bulgarian – Turkish border, where the local Kukeri holyday was just about to start next day. In the early morning the local group of ghostlike creatures started their ritual walk around the village.
I soon realized that besides my spooky company we were walking around nearly abandoned place where the old houses were into different stage of decay. After I asked one guy to step aside and pose for me in front of some ruins I was stroke by the result. I started pulling the kukeri to the sides of the road taking quick ghost portraits to tell the sad story of the depopulation of this village and that whole area.
