Secret Visibility

Domestic spaces have historically served as both havens and sites of violence for marginalized individuals. While some find solace and safety within their homes, others endure violence behind closed doors. Throughout the pandemic, survivors found themselves trapped with their abusers, forced to choose between the threat of violence and risking exposure to a deadly virus. This contributed to the increase in domestic violence cases in Brazil between 2020 and 2021 (Source: Ligue 180 and the Brazilian Public Security Forum). Delving into the nuances of bruise formation, from initial trauma to healing, the series unfolds as a dialogue between skin and space. I captured intimate glimpses of domestic spaces on film and infused them with local ingredients. During this destructive process, I began to perceive the negatives as survivors in their own right. The images resemble bruised flesh, with the original exposures captured within the walls of my own home, domestic appliances and spaces serve as canvases overlaid with the bruise color palette. Through this juxtaposition, I sought to illuminate both the physical marks of abuse and the psychological toll of living in an abusive environment
