The modern history of Cuba can be told in words of separations and tears. Young people leave the island in a continuous exodus, seeking a future outside, wherever "outside" is. Families are separated across oceans. Parents and grandparents live in empty houses where the noisy joy of the old days is now replaced by a painful silence. Memories of other lands fill the shelves, next to photos of those who no longer live on the island, and weekend reunions are replaced by phone calls and text messages.
"Those Left Behind" is a series of family portraits from an immigrant's perspective. It is also a collection of memories of a house in a small town in Cuba.
