Still a work in progress, with the working title 'The Apron', this project has helped me crystallise my disconnection with the nationalism that pervades my adopted home.
I have been almost unconsciously obsessing about that most British obsession - a wilfully misconstrued nostalgia for a long departed 'great' Britain. Nothing typifies that more than the ubiquitous Flag of Union, which from its inception in 1606 has forever been a controversial ensign.
Across four centuries, it has been the harbinger of plunder and subjugation.
During the worst violence of 'The Troubles' it was the badge of Loyalism and Ascendancy. A civil war being fought - albeit offshore, for many - within the borders of the UK between two unequally provisioned 'British' communities.
More recently, Black Lives Matter pricked the conscience of less blinkered individuals, and we are beginning to see the return of objects of cultural significance to their rightful homes. That said, in true Monty Python fashion, they 'don't mention the Elgin Marbles'.
Following Brexit, as the nation becomes measurably poorer, the Union Flag has become even more of a sacred talisman for the pro-Brexiteers. Reason-resistant jingoism will not allow any quarter for those who do down Great Britain as a revitalised player on the world stage.
The sun set on the Empire a long time ago but still some people refuse to take off their sunglasses.
Rule Britannia, Cool Britannia, God save the Queen / King...
Hang out your flag
