Part of a larger body of work, this series is inspired by Masahiro Mori’s theory of the Uncanny Valley where one might experience monstrosity and a profound revulsion when facing an almost perfect android. Each of the photograph submitted have been edited using AI tools. Even though the modifications created are minor additions to the overall composition of the picture, they do dramatically affect the experience and emotion that one may have. The disruptive burst of AI creates singularities turning the original narrative into an oddly familiar landscape. These singularities lead us to even question the reality of certain original elements in the photograph, challenging the authenticity of the whole photograph. But as Mori’s android, the AI additions fail to be perfect, to seamlessly blend with the original photograph leaving us with a sense of doubt and strangeness. The uncanny largely develop by Freud also tends to resonate outside the frame of the photograph. Calling out the invisible of what lies «off screen», the photograph becomes not only a grotesque and repulsive replica of reality but at the same time a disturbing immersive verisimilitude.
