Khlongtoey is an area of Bangkok referred to by locals as the "Bangkok Slums". Here over 100,000 people live together in an area of 1.5Km2. Initially populated in the 1960s by workers helping to build Bangkok, but unable to afford to live in the available housing. It was founded in a low-marshy area unsuitable for building much else. Although initially constructed of small makeshift shacks, it now has running water, electricity, and internet connections. Locals will warn you against visiting Khlongtoey. However, I found the people to be some of the warmest and friendliest people I encountered throughout Bangkok.
