I was born in Mumbai and raised in various parts of the subcontinent—Pakistan, India, Burma, and Bangladesh. In my early teens, my parents presented me with a Rolleiflex box camera—a most fortuitous gift. This opened up a whole new world for me.
When I set out to take pictures, I do not have a pre-set agenda. My motto is "to see, to hear, to feel, and to record." Often, it is my deep-seated need to document for posterity that drives me. Sometimes, a personal predilection or inclination for a particular moment, event, or situation serves as my inspiration.
My work encompasses both narrative and documentary styles. Black and white images are my first preference. I believe them to be more effective, visceral, and less distracting. My "moments" are often inspired by light, which profoundly affects me. As a sheer creative challenge, I limit the number of images I shoot.
I am deeply fond of Karachi. The simple daily observations I make while walking or driving are an essential part of my inspiration. My aim is to reflect my stance, skills, and emotions by capturing mundane moments and making these images memorable and extraordinary.
