At first glance, the uniting feature of this series is the framing of a single individual within the cityscape. Whether at work or play, each photo captures a brief moment of isolation from the crowds. However, the concept of aloneness was not the motivation for opening the shutter. These images were made without a preconceived thesis in mind. Instead, what ties them together is the joy of creativity and the aliveness of improvisation.
In selecting this series, I was drawn to the memory of exploring the city, forgetting time, and the acceptance of what may or may not come. It is a feeling of passive observation and flow within the constant change of light and people. Capturing these specific moments came from intuition; disconnecting from the calculating mind and embracing the uncertainty of the moment.
The aim in sharing this collection is to communicate the act of creativity for its own sake, without goals or expectations of outcomes. It is a childlike expression of our human desire to create and the fleeting feelings which accompany the moment.
The use of film and editing choices are intended to embrace the imperfections of our humanness, in contrast to digital precision and perfection. Not to say that analog is superior to digital, but to allow the flaws of self-developed film to show as an authentic aspect of the creative process.
