"A Bigger Splash" is a photo project capturing the spirit of the Songkran water festival in Bangkok, Thailand. At this time of the year, in April, Thailand enters its hottest month and people cool off with playful water fights to celebrate the Thai new year, a tradition which began when people would bathe their Buddha statues, but has now transformed, in many cases, into carefree hijinks. I documented the festival in 2024, spanning three days of non-stop fun. Each photo tells a story of laughter, surprise, and friendship amid the joyful chaos. Whether people happily blasting each other with super soakers, kids dunking each other with ice-cold buckets or strangers and friends playfully splashing each other, these images capture the heart of this tradition where everyone unleashes their inner child.
The project contrasts scenes of calm anticipation with bursts of playfulness. Moments like a friendly glance turning into an unexpected water fight highlight the whimsicality of these celebrations.
"A Bigger Splash" reminds us of the universal joy of letting loose and celebrating together. Water, the source of life, brings a sense of renewal and vitality to these festive moments. As the photographer, I chose to be part of the action instead of using a distant lens. This decision not only captured action but also genuine emotions and interactions, adding depth to the photos. It was also a refreshing way to stay cool in Bangkok's nearly 40 degrees Celsius heat.
